SUMMARY:So You Want To Be a Nonprofit CEO?
DESCRIPTION:Many of the best nonprofit leaders in our community didn’t start out planning to run an organization. They started with a program\, a team or a cause\, and one day someone asked if they’d thought about the top job. If you’ve been asking yourself that question\, this workshop is for you. \nThis half-day session is for emerging leaders\, program directors\, development staff and anyone else who wonders what it takes to lead a nonprofit. We’ll look honestly at the role: the work that fills a CEO’s calendar\, the skills it requires and the parts nobody tells you about until you’re in the chair. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of the job and a personal plan for getting ready. \nParticipants will learn how to: \n\nUnderstand the five major jobs of a nonprofit CEO: leading the mission\, the people\, the money\, the relationships and the future.\nTell the difference between management and leadership\, and why a CEO needs both.\nBuild a healthy partnership with a board based on trust\, clarity and no surprises.\nTreat fundraising as relationship building rather than simply asking for money.\nRead the financial signals every CEO should know\, including cash position and restricted vs. unrestricted funds.\nCommunicate clearly with staff\, board\, donors and the community.\nAssess your own readiness and leave with a 12-month leadership development roadmap.\n\nAs part of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence\, The Learning Center provides training and resources to help nonprofits serving Elkhart County grow their capacity and deepen their impact. This workshop builds on that commitment by helping the next generation of local nonprofit leaders prepare to guide their organizations well. \nLunch is included. Please limit participation to four people per nonprofit organization. \nAbout our speaker\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Deary is chief professional and organizational development officer at the Community Foundation of Elkhart County\, where he leads training\, coaching and consulting for nonprofits across the county. He knows the CEO role from the inside. Kevin spent 40 years with Boys & Girls Clubs\, including 30 years as CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County\, before retiring in January 2023. During his time there\, the operating budget grew from $93\,000 to $7.5 million and membership grew from 211 to more than 4\,000 young people. He led six successful capital campaigns and built the endowment to more than $7 million. \nKevin holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Goshen College and a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership from Clemson University\, along with advanced certifications from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Georgia. His honors include the Sagamore of the Wabash and CEO of the Year recognition from both United Way and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He also served in the U.S. Navy\, where he boxed on the Navy team. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here »
