Our Hearts Are With the Greater Elkhart County Community

More than $30,000 was given to this fund following a fatal shooting in January 2025 at an Elkhart Martin’s Super Market. Three people died and two Elkhart police officers were shot and injured. We are saddened by the tragedy and grateful for the generosity to help those impacted.

The foundation established this disaster relief fund in 2007 in response to tornadoes in Nappanee, and that fund continues to aid others. In the wake of the most recent tragedy, the foundation worked with local partners to help support those impacted. The foundation shared funds collected with partners as they provided services to those impacted by the tragic shooting at the store’s E. Jackson Boulevard location. The foundation did not give money to individuals or families directly but was committed to sharing 100 percent of all the money donated.

A number of counseling agencies received funds, including Ryan’s Place, Samaritan Center, Oaklawn, Hearth City Health, and Reason Enough To Act. Northside Nazarene Church, helping the family of Annasue Rocha, and The Vine Church, helping the family of Ben Jeffrey, received a portion of the funds. Some of the money was also given to Friends of the Police Fund.

We hope we don’t have to utilize the fund in this way again, but it will remain available as a resource in tragic circumstances.
