ELKHART, Ind. – Two local men are asking other men across Elkhart County to gather and be generous together. Jeff Boomershine and Curt Yoder have started Guys Who Give Elkhart County, a new giving circle hosted by the Community Foundation of Elkhart County that pairs charitable giving with a night out.
The group holds its first meeting on October 6 at Maplecrest Country Club, Goshen. Members will gather twice a year, on the first Tuesday of October and May, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Guys Who Give follows the model of 100 Women Who Care Elkhart County, the Community Foundation giving circle that has awarded nearly $500,000 to local nonprofits since its founding in 2015. Each member contributes $500 at the meeting, alone or with a partner, and that gift counts as one vote. Members can also cover both meetings at once with a single $1,000 annual gift. Any contributing member can nominate a nonprofit, as long as it’s a registered 501(c)(3). At each meeting, members draw three nonprofits at random from that evening’s nominations. A representative gives a five-minute pitch, members vote on the spot, and the nonprofit with the most votes receives the full amount raised that night. A nonprofit that is selected cannot be chosen again for three years, so the support keeps moving to new organizations.
“We were inspired by 100 Women Who Care Elkhart County to start a group for men so that they can also demonstrate generosity and impact from a collective gift,” said Boomershine.
“100 Women Who Care already proved this model works in Elkhart County,” said Yoder. “We just wanted to open that same table to the men of this community.”
No invitation is required to join. Any man with ties to Elkhart County can become a member by completing a commitment form at https://tally.so/r/D46Ggp and committing to give $500 twice a year for one year. Gifts can be made by cash, check, online at https://godonate.akoyago.com/InspiringGood/fund/11230, or through a charitable fund at the Community Foundation.
“Guys Who Give is exactly the kind of grassroots generosity we love to support,” said Carrie Berghoff, chief development officer of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County.
The meeting will include a cash bar.
