The Elkhart County Juvenile Court presents the 2017 Elkhart County Children’s Summit: Empowering Knowledge Through Perspective
Elkhart County youth care workers, case managers, law enforcement professionals and others who work to improve the health and welfare of children are invited to attend this 9th annual daylong event featuring keynote speakers on child issues, opportunities for networking and continuing education credits. Registration is $20 per individual, $35 for a table in the service fair. Registration is capped at 400. Payment due prior to event.
Doors open at 8:00 a.m., programming begins at 9 a.m. The event is scheduled to end by 3:30 p.m.
SPEAKERS
Judge Steven Teske is the chief judge of the Juvenile Court of Clayton County, Georgia and vice chairman of the Georgia Governor’s Office for Children and Families. He is the creator of the school-justice partnership model; a model of juvenile justice that reduces incarceration and reduces crime through a partnership between schools and juvenile justice. The project has reduced the flow of students into the school to incarceration pipeline. It is a national model that Judge Teske will share.
Dusty James was convicted of two counts of child neglect arising from her role in allowing her boyfriend to abuse her two small children, leading to the death of her three year old daughter. Dusty will share her story, and the warning signs of abuse that she unfortunately missed. She will share her experience and insight that comes from her own unfortunate tragedy.
Chad Long works for the Indiana Supreme Court through the Indiana Office of Court Services. He is a sought after speaker and will share his expertise on the words that escalate a situation and the words that calm. He will demonstrate how word choice and the tone that we use make a difference when working with children.
Sheldon Smith is the founder of the Dovetail Project, a program to teach young black men the parenting and life skills they never had a chance to learn. Smith guides the men through a 12-week curriculum on topics ranging from felony street law to methods for disciplining toddlers in positive ways. He is committed to engaging fathers for the best interest of children.

SERVICE FAIR
Organizations who want to exhibit in the service fair must pay the $35 fee to have a 6ft table in the service fair (electricity not included) as well as a $20 fee for each person who will work at the table. The service fair itself consists of about an hour near the beginning of the day and time during the lunch break. All registrants, including those working the service fair, are invited to listen and participate in all the programming for the day.
