Community Foundation congratulates 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars, Guy David Gundlach Memorial Scholars

Eight local students awarded substantial scholarships

The Community Foundation of Elkhart County is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Elkhart County.

The three students who will receive full-tuition scholarships at any Indiana college or university are:
●    Jaden Fear of Northwood High School
●    Tageeya Galeb of Goshen High School
●    Annika Troyer of Concord High School

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership. “This year’s applicants were a strong group and the volunteers and staff who interviewed finalists were greatly impressed,” said Guy Fisher, Chief Program Officer for the Community Foundation.

Each eligible Elkhart County high school nominates one senior student based on academic performance (including grades and course load), extra-curricular and civic involvement, work experience, career goals, special circumstances, interview, and an essay. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

“It means a lot for me,” said Tageeya Galeb, who said she is likely to attend Goshen College to study pre-med. “This removes a lot of the financial stressors from my family.”

Five additional students who participated in the process are receiving the Guy David Gundlach Memorial Scholarship:
●    Madison Lehman of Bethany Christian School
●    Jacob Whitlow of Elkhart High School
●    Jose Cervantes, Jr of Jimtown High School
●    Aislynn Hernandez of Northridge High School
●    Mariah Beachey of Fairfield High School

Each of these Gundlach winners will receive $5,000 per year for four years to any accredited Indiana college or university.  This memorial scholarship is only one of the many positive initiatives established due to Mr. Gundlach’s gift in 2011. Since the inception of the scholarship, 63 Elkhart County students have received this $20,000 award.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program. A total of 102 Elkhart County students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

The Community Foundation awards more than $2 million in scholarships annually. Its Universal Application for high school and adult students unlocks consideration for more than 30 different scholarships. That application opens January 1 and is due by March 1.
