Literacy League of Elkhart County Scholarship
Previously known as Altrusa International of Elkhart County, the Literacy League of Elkhart County has focused on making literacy a priority for over 100 years.
Through its annual fundraising efforts, the club has been providing scholarships to high school students in Elkhart County on a yearly basis. Then a member, Betty Brooks, passed away and generously left a monetary gift to the club as well as to the Business Women of Elkhart County. When the Business Women group disbanded, they gave the gift to the club. In 2002, this total gift was used to establish the scholarship fund with the Community Foundation of Elkhart County.
In addition to scholarships, the group has fulfilled its mission by distributing over 300 books to local youth, making 400 book bags for local preschools in Elkhart County, giving duffel bags to Oaklawn Children’s Center, donating numerous books to the Bashor Children’s Home library, and providing literacy materials, school supplies, and chairs to Walnut Hill Early Learning Center in Goshen.
The club still meets twice a year and continues to impact literacy in our community by giving scholarships to encourage the pursuit of education by female students in Elkhart County.
